
GRAND PRIX JEAN BASTIN 2019
General
Every three years, the Fonds Scientifique Jean Bastin awards a Grand Prize worth EUR 20,000 to the author of a scientific work relating to subjects in line with the objectives of the FSJB.
Awarded for the first time in 1992, this Grand Prize is one of the most prestigious prizes in the legal and economic fields.
A jury composed of professors from Belgian universities chairs the selection of the winning works. Eight Grands Prizes have already been awarded to academic or professional works.
Grand Prix 2019
The Fonds Scientifique Jean BASTIN, a Belgian international non-profit association, will grant the Prize for an amount of 20.000 euros to the author of the best thesis published after 1 January 2016 or to be published, on one of the following:
THE INDEBTEDNESS AND SOLVENCY OF THE STATES
- THE STATE IN ARBRITRATION: international commercial arbitration and investment arbitration. Issue with the enforcement of arbitral awards against a State. Scope and limit of immunity from enforcement. Remedies. The issue of enforcement and post-arbitration mediation on the quantum of the conviction.
- THE STATE-DEBTOR: issue of vulture funds, protective legislations. Debt market. Forum shopping. Enforcement of foreign arbitral decisions or awards.
- THE STATE IN BANKRUPTCY: problem of the public debt – IMF surveillance.
The thesis must be introduced, in conformity with the procedure set under the rules, by 30 November 2018 at the latest.

Grand Prix Rules
A three-yearly Prize of 20.000 euros will be granted to the best scientific thesis dedicated to the subject selected by the Jury for each particular Prize.
- Article 1: The Prize is reserved to academic or scientific theses.
- Article 2: If the thesis has not yet been published, the Fund can take the initiative to publish the thesis with the permission of the laureate. The Fund will have the discretion to deduct the net publishing cost from the Prize (publication minus the profit resulting from the sales turnover of the thesis).
- Article 3: The text must consist of at least 100 already published pages and, if this is not the case, of 100 pages with single line spacing. The thesis cannot already have been awarded any Prizes. The text can be written in French, Dutch or English.
- Article 4: The text has to contain a bibliography of the subject matter.
- Article 5: The Jury will decide at its own discretion on the Prize by a majority of its members. In the event of a tie, the President will have the casting vote.
- Article 6: The Jury will decide within 4 months after the final application deadline.
- Article 7: The subjects of the Prize are selected by the Jury. The Fund takes care of publicity and sets the application date, as well as the date of the academic symposium on which the Prize will be awarded to the laureate.
- Article 8: The theses will be sent, in three copies, accompanied with the curriculum vitae of the authorr, to the following address:
